“NIPPON FOOD SHIFT FES. TOKYO 2024” is an event held on October 19th and 20th in the Marunouchi area of Tokyo (Maru Cube, 1st floor of Maru Building, Marunouchi Nakadori) that aims to encourage people to think together about the challenges facing Japan’s “food” and “agriculture” and the future they are aiming for. Before becoming a manga artist, Arakawa Hiromu worked on dairy farming and in the fields of Hokkaido, and is currently serializing a farm essay comic, “Hyakusho Kizoku.” At this event, you can see reproductions of the original drawings from the serialized work.

This event will be a good opportunity to think about food and agriculture, which are topics that we don’t usually have much opportunity to think about, while having fun.

An event in Marunouchi to think about “food” and “agriculture”

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is running a national campaign called “Thinking about Japan through Food: Nippon Food Shift” to encourage consumers to think about the issues surrounding food and agriculture in Japan as something close to home.

As part of this initiative, we will be holding an event called “Thinking about Japan through Food. NIPPON FOOD SHIFT FES. TOKYO 2024” for two days on October 19th and 20th (Sundays) in the Marunouchi area (Maru Cube, 1st floor of Maru Building, Marunouchi Nakadori) to connect farmers, forestry workers, fishermen, food businesses and consumers and discuss together the circumstances and issues surrounding Japan’s “food” and “agriculture.”

There will be a variety of events, including introductions to businesses and agricultural initiatives that support the food system, workshops to deepen understanding of food and agriculture, especially among young people of Gen Z, a market that will fully showcase the appeal of domestic products, and sales from food trucks.

Stage Program

Maru Cube will host a variety of stage programs. The opening talk session will introduce the activities of Nippon Food Shift, including collaboration with House Foods Corporation and other public-private partnerships with promotion partners. There will also be an introduction to collaborations between food businesses and young people from Gen Z, and a discussion between students studying agriculture and design on solving food-related issues. In addition, a variety of talk sessions will be held under the title “From Onigiri to Nippon Food Shift,” including promotion of the region’s appeal through ingredients and the current status of inbound and overseas expansion.

Exhibition

Exhibitions will also be held at Marucube.

Before becoming a manga artist, Arakawa Hiromu worked on her family’s dairy farm and in the fields of Hokkaido. This exhibition will feature reproductions of the original drawings from the memorable first and 100th episodes of her farming essay comic “Hyakusho Kizoku” (published by Shinshokan Co., Ltd. and currently serialized in the bimonthly magazine “Wings”).

In addition, the unique Japanese-style action RPG game “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin,” which has the catchphrase “Rice is power!” and combines exhilarating combo action in which players fight against the demons that rule the island of Hinoe with simulation elements that deeply recreate traditional Japanese rice cultivation, will be made into an anime in 2024. Along with cuts from the anime, “rice knowledge” related to rice will be exhibited in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
